The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold an open house on Thursday, May 13, in Glen Rose to update the public on the agency’s 2009 assessment of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant’s safety performance.
Luminant Generation Co. operates the plant.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Somervell County Courthouse Annex. Community members can meet informally with the NRC staff to ask questions and learn about the agency’s role in ensuring safe plant operation.
“The NRC continually reviews the performance of Comanche Peak and the nation’s other commercial nuclear power facilities,” said Elmo E. Collins, NRC Region IV administrator. “This informal meeting will provide members of the public with an opportunity to learn about our annual assessment of safety performance at the plant.”
A letter sent from the NRC Region IV office to plant officials addresses the plant’s performance in 2009 and will serve as the basis for discussion. It is available for viewing on the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/LETTERS/cp_2009q4.pdf.
“Overall, Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and fully met all cornerstone objectives,” the letter read in part.
The NRC said Comanche Peak will receive the detailed inspection regime during 2010 used for plants that are operating well. It calls for inspections, starting on April 1 and continuing through June 30 of next year, in areas such as occupational radiation safety, public radiation safety, radioactive solid waste processing, radioactive materials handling, storage and transportation and fire protection.
Inspections are performed by NRC resident inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region IV Office in Arlington.
Current performance information for Comanche Peak Units 1 and 2 is available on the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/CP1/cp1_chart.html and http://www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/CP2/cp2_chart.html.
