AUSTIN — The State Bar of Texas has received a $22,500 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation to help fund its newest civics education project, “I was the first. Vote for me!”
The “I was the first. Vote for me!” initiative is a multimedia program that will teach elementary school students the important “firsts” in U.S. and Texas history. Twenty-two historic figures will be featured as animated segments on a website and in a book offered in both electronic and hardcopy formats. The animations and book will be available in both English and Spanish.
The project is designed to advance students’ skills in the areas of reading, history, math and social studies. Supplemental materials for teachers and students also will be available.
Civics education is critical to fostering engaged citizens who understand our democracy and the liberties it protects. The State Bar of Texas Law Related Education (LRE) Department provides tools to help teachers engage students in entertaining and thought-provoking ways. LRE provides a full array of tools to help teachers and students prepare for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.
2013-14 State Bar President Lisa Tatum, the daughter of educators, is the driving force behind the project.
Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $14 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundation.
The mission of the State Bar of Texas is to support the administration of the legal system, assure all citizens equal access to justice, foster high standards of ethical conduct for lawyers, enable its members to better serve their clients and the public, educate the public about the rule of law, and promote diversity in the administration of justice and the practice of law.
The State Bar of Texas is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Texas that provides educational programs for the legal profession and the public, administers the minimum continuing legal education program for attorneys, and manages the attorney discipline system.
