Bro. Jack Mills
ATHENS - Bro. Jack Mills, 89, passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at the New York Baptist Church with Bobby Smith and Charles Grasty officiating. Burial followed in the New York Cemetery with Cooper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jack Mills was born on Jan. 13, 1919. He was a member of the first graduating class of LaPoyner High School in 1937. He graduated from East Texas Baptist College and attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Mills was a veteran of World War II, where he served in Italy and North Africa. He was Henderson County Commissioner for Precinct 4 for five years before being ordained as a minister at LaRue Baptist Church. Brother Jack served as pastor of Center Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Indian Rock Baptist Church in Bedford, and New York Baptist Church in New York. He was the founding camp director at the Tarrant Baptist Association Encampment in Glen Rose. He founded the Jack Mills Evangelistic Association in 1991 and began mission work in Russia and the Ukraine continuing ministry work until his death. He had made 34 trips to Russia/Ukraine where he built 11 churches and preached to thousands. Brother Jack was a good pastor, preacher, husband and father. He was a great servant of the Lord.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Margie Jackson Mills; son-in-law, Joe Melton; great-grandsons, Harley Sinclair and Noah Jones.
Survivors include wife of 67 years, Lou Ellen Mills of Athens; daughters, Jackie Lewis of Fort Worth, Martha Melton of Athens, Mary Beck and husband Danny of Athens; son, Mark Mills and wife Marsha of Athens; sisters, Ila Heiskell and Von Ella Broussard; brother, Hays Mills; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great, great-grandchildren.
