Rev. Huey Pierce Long, 83, of Carthage passed away July 7 at his home.

Funeral services were held July 10 at the Carthage United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Ricky Jeane, Rev. Jeff Story and Rev. Dennis Landtroop officiating.

Burial followed in the Restland Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home.

Rev. Long was born June 4, 1929, in Mira, La. He was one of nine children born to the marriage of Ernest Clifton and Rose Adcock Long.

Rev. Long attended McLeod schools and graduated from McLeod High School with the class of 1946.

He met the love of his, Bertie Mason, while teaching music for the Stamps Music Schools. They were married on Dec. 22, 1946, and celebrated 65 years together.

Rev. Long also worked in the oilfield industry and many other trades throughout his life. However, his passion was ministering the word of God. Rev. Long pastored churches in Waskom, Glen Rose and Carthage, and held revivals in many other churches.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings E.C. Long Jr., Dorothy Long and Nolan Long.

Rev. Long is survived by his loving wife, Bertie Long, of Carthage; children Joycelyn Shaw and husband, Joe, of Pleasanton, Carolyn Sue Bishop and husband, James, of Carthage, Marilyn Phillips and husband, Wayne, of Glen Rose and Stephen Long of Carthage; brothers William Long and wife, Joan, of Augusta, Ga., and Lindsey Long and wife, Nancy, of Marshall; sisters Ruby Crawford of McLeod, Bessie Solomon of Axtell and Anna Edwards of Marshall; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Rev. Long's special caregivers: Kim Wornat, Jamie Davis, Kirby Lewis and the nurses and staff of Heart's Way Hospice.
