Geraldine "Gerry" Floyd Karol
FORT WORTH — Geraldine "Gerry" Floyd Karol, 90, loving mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
A funeral was held at 11:30 a.m. January 9 in Greenwood Chapel. Interment was at Greenwood Memorial Park.
Gerry was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Thackerville, Okla., to the late G.W. and Gladys Floyd. She graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1936 and Texas Wesleyan College in 1938. Gerry began her career in education teaching English and Spanish at Glen Rose High School, serving as principal during World War II.
Gerry married Joseph Karol of New York City in 1945. She taught English at TCU before beginning her life as the wife of a military officer and pilot. She thoroughly enjoyed raising her family and living in many different locations throughout the United Sates and Europe. To Gerry, traveling and moving always brought something new and exciting, and she presented it that way to her children.? After her husband's retirement to Fort Worth in 1970, Gerry obtained her master's in education from TCU and worked for the Fort Worth ISD as a visiting home teacher, special education teacher at Western Hills High School and district special education supervisor diagnostician. Her love of teaching and children was always apparent in her dedication to her students. She is still fondly remembered by her previous students from Glen Rose. Upon retirement from the Fort Worth ISD, Gerry became active in the Rose Lisenby Shakespeare Club, where she served as president and various other officer positions, Fort Worth Women's Club, TCU Thursday Morning Women's Exes, Fort Worth Power Squadron and military retirement groups. Travel continued to be a part of her life with her husband, revisiting favorite countries and discovering new destinations.
Gerry's family meant everything to her. Her wisdom, strength, compassion and sense of humor were loved and admired by her family, friends and caregivers and will be missed. She never stopped reaching people through love and compassion.
The family wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the staffs of Barton House and Trinity Terrace Skilled Nursing Center who demonstrated their love for Gerry daily as her caretakers. Their loyalty and dedication to Gerry will never be forgotten by her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Karol; daughter, Barbara Jean; sister, DeAlva Allen; and brothers, Charles T. Floyd and George W. Floyd.
Survivors include daughters, Janet Thoms and husband, Don, and Diana Karol; son, Joe Karol and wife, Ann; grandchildren, Zach Thoms, Hunter Thoms, Joe M. Karol, Michael J. Karol and Analise Karol; sisters, Wanda Bushnell and Sybil Danna; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members.
