This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Texas Historical Commission’s Main Street program. In 1981, the Texas Historical Commission introduced the Main Street program to Texas and helped our state become one of the first state Main Street coordinating programs in the nation. The program is to provides technical expertise, education, resources and support to communities for the purpose of preserving and revitalizing downtown spaces.

Today, there are 87 official Texas Main Street communities all across Texas that range in population from 2,000 to more than 300,000. Cumulatively, designated Texas Main Street communities have reported significant reinvestment into their historic downtowns, a majority of which has been private investment. Over the years, Main Street cities have added about 35,000 jobs and 8,700 new small businesses to the Texas economy.

In our area, the cities of Gainesville, Paris, Celina, Pilot Point, Sherman and Denison are all participants in the Main Street program. In honor of the 35th Anniversary, the THC has created the Celebrate Main Street Sweepstakes, which provides the winner with a weekend getaway to a Main Street city. This month’s featured city is Denison, which has been a participant in the program for over 25 years. The package includes two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn, breakfast at CJ’s Coffee Cafe, dinner at DeVolli’s, and a tour of the Eisenhower Birthplace Historic Site.
