For students planning to show a meat pen (market rabbits) or broilers (market poultry) at the 2014 Somervell County Youth Fair (SCYF), the deadline to order those projects is fast approaching.

If students want to show broilers at the SCYF, the order deadline to the County Extension Office is October 16. All broilers must be made through this order. The pullets (baby broilers) will be $1.55 apiece with orders in increments of five with a 10-pullet minimum. An entry consists of a pen of three broilers and the group must weigh a minimum of nine pounds. The pickup date will be Wednesday, Dec. 4. The show date is Saturday, Jan. 11.

If students want to show meat pens at the SCYF, they are encouraged to contact their own breeder and make the arrangements. The show date is Jan. 11. An entry consists of a pen of three rabbits, weighing 10-15 pounds per pen. Meat pens are shown as a pen of three. Students are encouraged to order at least four rabbits, preferably five and choose their best three to show. The County Extension office has a list of rabbit breeders for those needing assistance finding one.
