Glen Rose High School opened its 2018 powerlifting season last Saturday at the Dublin Invitational, where Dillon Graves was named the meet’s outstanding lifter and Nic Lara won his weight class. Three Lady Tigers — Angie Herrera, Antonia Diaz and Abigail Nightingale — set new school records in the meet.

The GRHS boys placed third in the team standings and the Lady Tigers took 10th overall in the girls division.

GRHS powerlifting coach Terry Harlin said the squad had a great day overall to start the season in the meet, which featured lifters from 20 schools.

“It was a very competitive field of lifters both on the boys and girls side, and (I) felt like our kids competed extremely well,” Harlin noted. “We had several lifters place in the top five scoring points for their team, and several others lifters placing in the top 10 in their respective classes. On the girls side we had several school records either set, broken or tied.”

Herrera, who placed third in her weight class, established school records for girls powerlifting in overall total (300 pounds, for third place overall), along with squad (115 pounds), bench press (55) and deadlift (130).

The 580 total lifted by Diaz was a new GRHS girls mark in her weight class, and she also set a new standard in the squat (210).

Nightingale’s 110-pound lift in the girls bench press is also a GRHS girls record.

Nic Lara won the boys 242-pound weight class with a total of 1,255 pounds lifted.

Graves took second in the boys 148-pound class with a total of 1,050 pounds.

Also for the Glen Rose boys, Hayden Shaw was second in the super heavyweight class, and teammate Max Matheny took third in that category.

The next meet for Glen Rose will be Saturday, Jan. 27 at Comanche High School.
