The 10th-ranked Glen Rose Lady Tigers improved to 10-1 Tuesday night with a 42-33 girls basketball victory over Eastland at Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers got balanced scoring with 14 points from Bree Baker and nine and eight points each from Hailey Ibarra and Kennedy Bunt to notch their third straight victory.

“I thought we played really well. Eastland is a very talented team, and they are well-coached,” Glen Rose girls basketball coach Ramsey Ghazal said.  “It’s hard to win a game when you are outshot from the free-throw line 18-5, so we had to overcome that.”

Offensively, Baker was solid throughout, while Ibarra gave the Lady Tigers a big lift in the first half — and in particular in the second quarter when she scored six points at a crucial stage of the game.

The Lady Tigers trailed by as many as six in the first quarter before cutting the lead to one at 11-10 heading in the second quarter. A bucket by Abby Stephenson gave Glen Rose a 12-11 lead, and Ibarra upped it to 14-11 with a layup.

Eastland took a brief 18-16 lead before Ibarra had back-to-back scores to give the Lady Tigers the lead for good at 20-18.

Bunt scored six of her eight in the third quarter as the Lady Tigers, who led 22-18 at the break, opened up their advantage 10 points heading into the final frame. The Lady Tigers held Eastland to just one foul shot in the first 4:15 of the quarter and one basket in the first 5:15 of the third quarter.

Bunt scored six straight points on two foul shots and two baskets to increase the lead to 28-21. Baker’s 3-pointer right before the end of the quarter pushed the lead to 33-23.

“With Collie (Keller) out with a bruised knee, Kennedy gave us a huge lift not only on offense but on defense as well,” Ghazal said. “She struggled the first four minutes, but settled down and played great.”

In all, the Lady Tigers held Eastland to just four field goals and seven free throws in the second half to earn the win.

“This was one of our more efficient games on offense,” Ghazal said. “Hailey hurt them early, and when they trapped and forced Hailey to give the ball up, we had other girls step up. Bree’s 14 points were big for us. This was a big win.”

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to be back in action at the Hillsboro Tournament on Thursday when they meet Waco La Vega at 9 a.m. and Hillsboro at 1:30 p.m. On Friday, the Lady Tigers take on Corsicana at 9 a.m., and then close out the tournament with Everman at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Glen Rose is back at home Tuesday night when it hosts Hico with junior varsity beginning at 5 p.m. with varsity immediately following.

At the Glen Rose Lions Club Tournament last weekend, the Lady Tigers went 3-1 and won the Silver Bracket Championship. They beat Clyde (56-25) on Thursday, and then suffered their first loss of the season to Burnet (45-36). They closed out the tournament with wins over Alvarado (85-24) and Gatesville (29-23).
