Tatum Stegint slugged two homers and drove in five runs Tuesday to help the Glen Rose Lady Tigers down Stephenville 13-7 in their District 7-4A softball contest at McCleskey Field in Stephenville.
Mallory Goff also homered to help coach Kiel Miller’s Lady Tigers improve to 3-3 in district as they remained in playoff contention with two district games remaining.
Brownwood leads the five-team race with only one district loss.
Tuesday’s win gave the 17-11-1 Lady Tigers a sweep over Stephenville in their two district contests. GRHS won the first matchup, at home on March 22, by a 4-3 margin.
This time, the hitters ruled.
The Honeybees clubbed a dozen hits, including seven for extra bases.
Stegint launched her home runs in the Lady Tigers’ four-run first inning and in the fourth inning when they added five runs.
Also for Glen Rose Belle McDonald, who had a double, drove in two runs as did Courtney Morris. Kaylee McDonald, Addison Nance and Mallory Goff recorded one RBI each.
Stegint was 2-for-3 overall, while McDonald and Nance were both 2-for-4 and Taylor McKenzie went 2-for-5. Nance had a triple and a single.
Starting pitcher Taylor McKenzie got the victory for SHS. She worked seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. She struck out 10 and walked only one.
Nance allowed three runs on two hits to close out the game, and walked one.
The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play at home against Mineral Wells on Friday, April 12, (varsity at 7 p.m.). Their next game is slated for April 18 at Godley, to close out district play.
