THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Team of the week: Weiss

With their backs to the wall, the Wolves came out swinging, earning a sweep over Marble Falls (10-11, 4-4 District 17-5A) with victories of 5-0 and 11-2, respectively. Pitcher Gareth Tobies threw a four-hit shoutout, fanning eight Mustangs in the win. He also went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI to go along with Jason Usher (2-for-3, one RBI) and Nathan Garcia’s (2-for-4, one RBI) big days at the plate. The wins keep the Wolves (11-14, 3-5) in the playoff conversation and snapped a four-game skid.

Player of the week: Jared Southard, Rouse

The Raiders’ (17-8, 10-0) pitcher pitched six and one-third’s worth of no-hit baseball to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over Cedar Park (7-18, 4-4) Friday. Southward’s no-hitter was broken up in the seventh inning, then an error helped cut the lead to one run and put a runner on second. Then, with a runner in scoring position, Southard calmly got a ground ball to end the game and complete a pivotal sweep over the Timberwolves. Southard struck out 10 batters in the win.

THE WEEK IN PREVIEW

Game of the week: Rouse vs. Pflugerville

The only two teams still alive in the race for the district title meet in a heavyweight clash this week. The Panthers travel to Rouse on April 16, then return the favor by hosting the Raiders on April 18. One win from the Raiders would be enough to seal the district title, while a clean sweep from the Panthers would make things mighty interesting as both squads sprint toward the end of the season. Rouse’s powerful lineup will be challenged by a pair of aces in the Panthers’ pitching staff.
