The Glen Rose Tigers won their seventh consecutive football game Friday over Pecos, outscoring the Eagles 63-42 as junior quarterback Austin Worthen ran for four touchdowns and threw for two more in their Class 4A Division II area playoff at Abilene Wylie High School’s Bulldog Stadium.
The District 4-4A Division II champion Tigers (7-5) of head coach Cliff Watkins advanced to the regional semifinal round of the playoffs to take on Iowa Park (11-1). The Hawks advanced with their 42-23 win over Dalhart Friday.
J.W. Roper contributed three rushing TDs for the Tigers.
In addition to his two rushing TDs, Worthen connected on scoring passes to Ricky Douglas and Austin Roach.
The Tigers never trailed, but Watkins noted that the defense had to adjust to a surprise offensive wrinkle. Pecos began using a wildcat formation to get the ball in the hands of its top running back, taking a direct snap, but Wakins said he was excited about the way his squad played overall.
“I liked the way we found a way to win the game. Overall, we executed well offensively, and we got some stops defensively when we needed them,” Watkins said. “We look forward to another week, and to get a chance to win again.
“They (the Eagles) do a good job of running the ball, and they did some different stuff. We did a pretty good job of stopping what they were doing.”
The playoff against Iowa Park is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. Coach Cliff Watkins' Tigers (7-5) posted their seventh consecutive win on Friday, 63-42 over Pecos.
For the Iowa Park game, tickets for both students and adults will be $5 each. There will be a $5 parking fee at the stadium, and Glen Rose fans will be on the visitors side. The winner will advance to the regional round the following week against either Greenwood or Lubbock Estacado. Those two teams will also be playing in Abilene on Friday night, at Abilene Christian University.
Iowa Park was the team that eliminated the Tigers from last year’s football playoffs, 31-28, in the fourth round.
