District 8-3A play was slated to start last Friday for the Glen Rose Lady Tigers.
Instead, the Lady Tigers earned a free win after Hillsboro made the decision to forfeit its varsity girls basketball schedule.
“Basically, Hillsboro made the announcement and they held a meeting of district officials (Jan. 4),” said Glen Rose head coach Sheree Hill. “I wasn’t at the meeting, but I couldn’t imagine they would force Hillsboro to play.”
According to sources, Hillsboro will still play its JV and freshman schedules and opposing teams have the option of playing their varsity squads against Hillsboro’s JV.
“I gave some younger varsity kids the option of playing with the JV if they wanted to,” said Hill. “Shelby Rotan, Sammy Montoya and Taylor Rhodes played with the JV Friday night.”
Thanks to the forfeit, Glen Rose was officially 1-0 in district entering Tuesday’s contest at Alvarado. The Lady Tigers return home Friday for an 8-3A battle against Venus.
