The JV defense has been a force to be reckoned early this season, allowing just three points over two games.

It didn't break much more Thursday night, lifting the Tigers to their first 'W' of the season - 8-6 over Mineral Wells.

The defense set up the offense's first score of the season after Estaban Carranza forced and recovered a fumble on the three-yard line. Jed Bridges ran the ball in for a score with Senovia De La Garza converting the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

The score stayed 8-0 until the fourth when a Mineral Wells fumble recovery set up their only touchdown. A strong defensive play by Sergio Ayala kept the Rams from tying the game on the ensuing two-point attempt.

Mineral Wells had one last chance to take the lead, but Jake Betsill forced a fumble that was recovered by Carranza.

Keith McAnally led the defense with eight tackles and a sack while De La Garza had six stops and an interception.

Shane Strealy also had four tackles and a sack while Kevin Uehlein (6) and Ernesto Salinas (5) also were top tacklers.

De La Garza had 92 yards rushing while Bridges had 52 and a touchdown on the ground and 38 yards through the air.

The freshman team dropped its second straight contest, falling to Mineral Wells, 26-16.

Sam Strother hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from Colton Lane to highlight to offensive night. Hayden Swearengin posted a team-high 21 yards rushing while Devin Riedeman and Jacob Locke each had 13 on the ground.

Bret Taylor led the team with 12 tackles while Jonathan Rios was next with seven. Cade Cauble and Drennan Brewer each made five stops.

Both teams travel to Gatesville Thursday. The freshmen begin at 5 p.m. and the JV at 6:30 p.m.
