The JV Tigers didn’t beat Venus as badly in the second meeting between the two teams on Friday, but Glen Rose still won in blowout fashion.
The Tigers took the third quarter 19-6 on the way to a 58-34 victory.
“They had a new player who was pretty good, so they played us closer,” said coach Erik Hartman. “We had an excellent third quarter to pull away, but I do credit Venus for playing better this time.”
Top scorers in the win were Jayden Reynolds (11), Carter Garrison (9) and Hunter Williams (7). Other Tigers to get on the board included Derek Kramer (6), Peyton Lytle (6), Jayton Dillard (5), Wayne McFadin (5), Adam Frazier (3), Hayden Swearengin (2), Trey Yocham (2) and Sam Strother (2).
Six different Tigers made a three-pointer in the win.
“I didn’t know six guys made a three; that’s cool,” Hartman said.
As Glen Rose won the first quarter 12-5, Reynolds and McFadin each scored five.
“Jayden responded with greater effort (Friday) after I challenged him, and he played a lot better,” Hartman said.
When the Tigers took the second quarter 16-11, Garrison set the pace with four points.
“Garrison has gotten so much better this season,” Hartman said. “His length is valuable for us on defense.”
In the 19-6 third quarter, Reynolds and Williams each scored four.
“It was good to see Drayton hitting some shots,” the coach said. “We talked about kicking out to shooters if they doubled down on our guy in the paint. We hit several threes off of that and credit the kids for doing the right things in our offense.”
Venus kept plugging away and managed to take the fourth quarter 12-11. Kramer also kept his effort up and scored for the third-straight quarter.
“Derek is a good rebounder and he creates his points off of it,” Hartman said. “He keeps improving.”
The JV Tigers will wrap up their season Monday against Hillsboro.
“We want to show the strides we’ve made this year, no matter who the opponent is,” the coach said.
