The Walnut Springs Hornets basketball team is going strong so far this season with a 16-4 record, and the blue team is hot right now with a four-game winning streak.

The Hornets most recently defeated Covington 68-30 on Tuesday. Walnut Springs put the game away early, leading 18-2 after the first quarter and 47-4 at halftime.

Jessy Ramos led the way with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Other top producers in the win were Carlos Lerma (14 points, 4 assists, 7 steals) and Zane Trotter (8 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals).

More impressively, in Walnut Springs’ previous game it avenged one of its four losses with a 55-40 win over Blum. After a 28-20 lead at halftime, the Hornets put themselves in great position to win with a 19-10 third quarter.

Lerma had a huge game in this win with 25 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals. Ramos added 21 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Lerma has been on a roll this season, considering he’s averaging a whopping 26.3 points per game. Ramos has been the other top option at 12.8 points per contest. Ramos is also first in rebounding average (7.8) and third in steals (2.1), while Lerma is second in rebounds (5.8) and first in steals (3.8).

The Hornets will now host Iredell on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Hornets are also enjoying a great season, as they currently sport a record of 18-3. Walnut Springs managed to bounce back from its most recent loss to Blum two games ago with a hard-fought 34-32 win over Covington on Tuesday.

Rosa Fabela led the charge with 12 points, six rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Monica Muniz (8 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals) also factored heavily into the win.

The team’s top scorers thus far this season have been Muniz (15.6), Fabela (11.3) and Gabby Villalovos (10.9). Fabela leads the team in rebounding (7.5), while Muniz (3.7) is setting the pace in steals.

The Lady Hornets will take on Iredell Friday at 6 p.m.
