Squaw Valley Golf Club in Glen Rose is the best mid-priced golf experience in North Texas, according to the Dallas Morning-News.

A Morning-News panel consisting of golf pros, course architects, writers and players recently recognized Squaw Valley as the best in its class, adding to the already positive reputation of the Somervell County-owned club.

"Any recognition, especially from an organization like the Dallas Morning-News, is very special," said club pro Duff Cunningham. "They've recognized us several times before, but never like this. We were No. 8 last year, but to be No. 1 is great."

While the honor is appreciated, the efforts of those committed to maintaining Squaw Valley's high level of golf and customer service say it's the customers, not the awards, that motivate them.

"We try to get better every day for our customers," Cunningham said. "(Course Superintendent) Jeff Hansen is working awfully hard to be sure we have two great golf courses here, and we've been working awfully hard on the service end. We take pride in making sure our customers fully enjoy the course, the service and their round of golf."

Cunningham says he can't put his finger on any one thing that made Squaw Valley jump from No. 8 in 2008 to No. 1 this spring.

"It's a combination of a lot of things I guess," he says. "Whether it's Jeff being innovative with some of the bunkers or improving the fairways and rough or the way the balls roll on the greens; or if it's our service where we're working hard to take care of everything for our customers, I'm not sure. We're just looking to continue to improve any way we can."
