The JV Tiger baseball team did a solid job to open its season in the Grandview Tournament, considering Glen Rose went home with a third-place finish on Saturday.

The JV Tigers (2-1) defeated Wortham 11-7 to move back above .500. Glen Rose finished with more hits (5-3) and fewer errors (3-6). Wortham was at its best with three runs in the first inning and two in the fifth, while the JV Tigers scored five in the second and three in the fourth.

Pitchers included Cody Barker (3 IP, 4 R – 3 ER, 3 H, 5 W, 5 K) and then Colten Reeves (2 IP, 3 R – 0 R, 0 H, W, 5 K).

“We struggled early in the game (down 3-1) and Cody got off to a tough start on the mound, but he came back to finish strong and worked out of some jams,” said coach Fred Cordova. “We brought Colten back in for the last three innings and he did a good job to close it out.”

Top hitters were Cody Halcom (double, 2 RBIs), Trevor Crawford (triple, RBI), Stone Costello (single, RBI), Trey Yocham (double) and Reeves (double).

“The guys did come up with some big doubles, and then Trevor had the triple for us,” Cordova said. “It shows when we’re patient and sit back on the ball we can be some pretty good hitters.”

Other offensive contributors were Dylan Hammond (RBI), Layne McAnear (RBI) and Reese Nickell (RBI).

“We still have plenty of work to do on hitting because we’re getting a lot of weak ground balls and hopefully we’ll get better as the year goes by,” Cordova said. “I did like how we fought back from the early 3-0 hole.”

The JV Tigers will now travel to Brownwood for a 4:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

“We’ll get work for some other pitchers and sharpen up our fundamentals as we prepare for our home tournament,” the coach said.
