Glen Rose made a big defensive stand late in the second quarter, then scored on its first two second half possessions to bury Venus 33-16 in junior varsity football action last week.

Venus appeared ready to wipe out an early 13-0 Glen Rose lead. The Bulldogs used a long drive and two-point conversion to make it 13-8, then marched back to the red zone just before the end of the first half.

But the Tigers held, then sprinted out of the second half gates with Logan Caylor touchdown runs covering six and seven yards.

Throw in a two-point-conversion by Caylor and it was suddenly 27-8. He finished with 50 yards on the ground.

Venus pulled within 11 in the fourth before quarterback Colton Bretton found Garrett Trotter for an 11-yard touchdown strike to provide the final tally.

It was Bretton’s second TD pass and he also scored on the ground. Bretton began the scoring early, sprinting 68 yards to pay dirt. He later threw a 14-yard TD to Austin Gibson, opening up a 13-0 lead.

Bretton’s impressive stat line includes 135 yards rushing and another 135 on nine pass completions.

Gibson and Jake Sullivan were his favorite targets with three catches each. Gibson, who also rushed for 12 yards, had 50 yards through the air while Sullivan had 49.

Gibson also stood out on defense with a 40-yard interception return, a fumble recovery and four tackles.

Garrett Trotter contributed two catches for 30 yards and also had 34 return yards for the Tigers.

Hance Burney and Keith McAnally each forced a fumble and Burney recovered one for the Tiger defense, which was led in tackles by Logan Douglas with eight and Jack Payne with six. Colton Schroeder and Will McNelly had five each while three players - Carter Brandt, Jeremy Cates and Westley Pritchard all had four.
