Caleb Ballesteros scored three touchdowns and made a team-high eight tackles to lead Walnut Springs to a 66-21 mercy-rule victory in non-district six-man football action at Granbury Happy Hills last Friday.
Ballesteros scored twice on the ground and once on a reception, leading an offensive explosion that featured touchdowns by five different Hornet players. The result was a 45-point lead and the invoking of six-manís 45-point mercy rule with 21 seconds remaining in the third period.
Ballesteros scored the first two touchdowns of the night on runs of 29 and 44 yards, and Johnathan Stack followed with scoring sprints of 44 and 36 yards before Happy Hills ever got on the board.
Walnut Springs added to its big lead with second quarter scores on a Eddie Whitt pass to Caleb Ballesteros from nine yards out, and a six-yard touchdown jaunt by Mario Ballesteros.
Happy Hills finally got the offense revved up after halftime, scoring on a 44-yard run and an 8-yard pass, but it was too little, too late.
Sandwiched between the Happy Hills touchdowns was a 19-yard gallop to the end zone by Whitt.
The Hornets followed the TAPPS clubís final score with two in the last minute of the third quarter. Kody Stack found the end zone on a five-yard run before Trey Busha ended the game with a 35-yard interception return to pay dirt.
Johnathan Stack had 98 yards and the two early first quarter touchdowns on five rushing attempts, while Caleb Ballesteros finished with 82 yards on three carries.
The Hornets attempted only six passes, completing four. Whitt had a pair of completions on three attempts, including one for a touchdown. Jacob White was the leading receiver with two grabs for 46 yards.
Kody Stack joined Caleb Ballesteros with eight tackles defensively, while Johnathan Stack had an interception to go along with the one that Buscha returned for the game-ending touchdown.
Walnut Springs improved to 3-3 with the victory, while Happy Hills fell to 2-2. The Hornets begin Six-Man-Division II, Region II District 15 play on Friday when they host Oglesby at 7:30 p.m.
