Glen Rose used pitching one game and hitting the next to sweep West and Venus in District 12-3A baseball action and secure a spot in the Class 3A state playoffs.
Derek Thompson pitched a complete game masterpiece against West, allowing only one run on two hits to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 victory.
As if his pitching didnít hurt West enough, he also did damage at the plate with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning to begin the scoring.
The Tigers added an insurance run in their half of the third, as consecutive singles by Betsill, Teague and Dylan Mobly resulted in Betsill crossing the plate and Mobley picking up the RBI.
West finally got on the board in the top of the fourth with a home run that gave the Trojans exactly half of their hit total for the game.
The Glen Rose bats were silent from that point forward, but it didnít matter, as Thompson continued to mow down the West hitters, sitting eight down on strikes. He struck out the side in the fifth, two more in the sixth and then finished the contest in style by blowing one last strike by a swinging Trojan who came up empty for the final out.
The Tigers had to switch gears and pull off a comeback against Venus.
VHS led 3-0 after one inning and 6-2 after two.
The Glen Rose scoring began in the top of the second, and again began with Thompson. He doubled to begin the frame, then scored on a Douglas single. After a steal, Douglas scored on an RBI single by Goebel.
After Venus stretched its advantage back to four in the bottom half of the second, the Tigers began to crawl back.
Mobly homered in the third, Venus got the run back in the fifth, and then the Tigers put up two runs in the sixth to trail, 7-5.
The first sixth-inning run was scored by Plaster, who doubled before Betsillís RBI single. Betsill later scored on a Thompson single.
In the seventh, the Tigers exploded like a team excited to be bound for the playoffs, scoring six runs to win, 11-7.
Taylor was hit by a pitch, Goebel walked and Plasterís sacrifice ground out put runners at second and third with only one out. Betsill was then hit by a pitch to load them up before a Teague triple cleaned them off.
Teague and Mobly, who reached on a walk, finished the scoring when Thompson drove them in with another single.
With the regular season complete, the second place Tigers of District 12-3A meet Carrollton Ranchview, third in 11-3A, in the 3A Region II bi-district playoffs next week.
