The Freshman Lady Tigers didn’t allow a single point in both the first and third quarters on Friday, which paved the way for a big win.

Glen Rose defeated Venus 35-17 for its third win in the last four games.

“Our goal was to get out there and play defense,” said coach Carrie Lytle. “That we shut them out in two quarters is just icing on the cake.”

Scorers included Hailey Allen (12), Dakotah Ponce (8), Megan Bretton (6), Brenna Taylor (4), Bailey Brown (2), Hannah Morales (2) and Page Green (1).

As Glen Rose took the opening quarter 11-0, Ponce was the catalyst with six points.

“Dakotah did a great job of offensive rebounding,” Lytle said.

While Bretton showed a nice touch on her jumper with four points in the second quarter, Glen Rose lost the frame 10-6.

“We had trouble knowing who our man was (defensively) for a while,” Lytle said. “Megan does a great job catching the ball and penetrating to the basket, along with her jumper.”

When the Lady Tigers owned the third quarter 13-0, Allen was rolling with eight of those points.

“Hailey did a good job of driving to the basket and she also got some steals,” Lytle said.

Venus took the fourth quarter 7-5, but its chance to win had long since passed. The Lady Tigers will host Hillsboro on Tuesday.

“The girls have been watching game film of themselves and they’re becoming more aware of what they’re doing and not doing,” Lytle said. “They did even a little better than I expected coming back from the Christmas break.”
