Citizens Center announces weekly activities

Just when you thought we had escaped a harsh winter and spring was coming early … we had a week of snow and ice.

The Somervell County Citizens Center was closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the weather and closed by 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning as the weather was growing steadily worse. The center will try to post on our website and Facebook page when we will be closed. If the schools are closed due to the weather, the center will be also. The center is looking at another bad day or two and will be watching the weather closely, especially concerning Thursday.

If you’ve been thinking about getting into better shape, remember that we have some treadmills and other equipment and a new stationary bike in our exercise room. Come on down.

The center is starting up game night on the third Friday of the month again. Come join us for your favorite board game at 6 p.m. on March 20.

Due to weather, the last dance was cancelled. The next dance will be on Friday, March 13 featuring Michael Cote. Admission is $5 at the door. Light refreshments are included. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the band starts at 7 p.m.

The center will be celebrating St. Patty’s Day this year with a pub theme. There will be two trivia teams formed to play some “local pub” trivia. There will also be a celebration with some pretzels and non-alcoholic beer – sorry, but those are rules of the owners of the building, Somervell County). The center will also have the usual wearing of the “most green” including a prize for the winner.

Last week’s Bunco tournament was cancelled as few players turned up due to the weather.

Activities at the Citizen’s Center beginning March 9 are:

Monday – Walmart shopping, Chess and Bingo.

Tuesday – RECAP meeting, wood carving and Wii bowling.

Wednesday – Bunco tournament and blood pressure screening by Glen Rose Medical Center.

Thursday – AARP tax preparation, Chess and David’s shopping.

Friday – Friday Night Dance, Bingo and Brookshire’s shopping.

Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, Food Stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior oriented services, please call or come by the center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us. Don’t forget to visit our website at for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures or “like” our Facebook page “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” For more information, call 254-897-2139, or stop by!
