If you are stir-crazy from the long dreary winter, you should come check out the Somervell County Citizens Center. The center is always playing Forty-Two, including two tournaments a month. There are two Bunco tournaments a month, Bingo twice a week and other activities based around the seasons and holidays, etc.

The center isn’t just for “old people.” Senior citizens are the new middle-aged, you know. Come see us, you might be pleasantly surprised!

There was a huge turnout for our last dance this past Friday night. If you haven’t been to one of our dances, you’re missing out. Admissions is $5 to get in to hear a live band and light refreshments are provided. There is no tobacco or alcohol allowed, and most of those attending are over 60. Come listen, dance and maybe even make some new friends. The dances are on the second and fourth Friday nights.

Come help the center celebrate March birthdays on Wednesday, March 25 from 11 a.m. to noon. Lunch will be pot roast and all the fixings and birthday cake. Entertainment provided by Margie Hartsfield. You might even see a few people get up and dance.

The center is starting up game night on the third Friday of the month again. Come join us for your favorite board game at 6 p.m. on March 20.

The next dance will be held on Friday, March 27, featuring Truman, Hudson & Riggin. Admission is $5 at the door. Light refreshments are included. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the band starts at 7 p.m.

Winners of last week’s Bunco tournament were: first-time winner, Janelle Gartrell, with the most Buncos with seven; Jimmy Riley with the most wins with 18; and Ann Parham with the most losses with 16. Congrats to the winners and losers. Others playing in the tournament were Zula Hunter, Betty Flanagan, Carole Kofke, Caroline Abrego, Mary Riley, Pat Thompson, Louise McCoy and Janet Stacy. Thanks also to Stacy who sets up and oversees the tournament.

Activities at the Citizen’s Center beginning March 23 are:

Monday – Chess and Bingo.

Tuesday – Wood carving and Wii bowling.

Wednesday – March birthday celebration, Bunco tournament and blood pressure screening by Glen Rose Nursing & Rehab.

Thursday – AARP tax preparation, chess and David’s shopping.

Friday – Friday night dance, Bingo and Brookshire’s shopping on Friday.

Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, Food Stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior oriented services, please call or come by the Center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.glenrosesccoa.com for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures or “like” our Facebook page “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” For more information, call the center at 254-897-2139 or stop by!
