The Glen Rose High School 7 on 7 squad had a strong start to its season last Saturday in the 16-team Gatesville SQT (State Qualifying Tournament, but was one win shy of qualifying for the state tournament.

The Glen Rose team, which is coached by David Halcom because it’s an offseason, non-UIL competition, has 16 to 20 players participating this season.

The Tigers opened the season with the first game of the Gatesville tournament against Lorena, and won by a 28-25 margin.

Glen Rose then defeated Groesbeck, 48-20, and Robinson, 14-13.

That put the Tigers into the semifinal round against Stephenville, but the Yellow Jackets prevailed, 20-13.

Stephenville and Gatesville reached the tournament final, both qualifying for the Division II state tournament, June 29-30 in College Station. The title game between Gatesville and Stephenville was not played because both teams had qualified.

The next action for the Glen Rose team is this Saturday in the 32-team Brock SQT, with games starting at 9 a.m. for the Tigers at the junior high school field.

On June 16 the Tigers will play in the Jim Ned High School SQT in Tuscola, followed by the Brownwood tournament on June 23. League play games for Glen Rose will be scheduled starting the following week.

So far 17 teams across the state have qualified for the Division II tournament, which will include Class 4A, 3A, 2A and A. Three schools have qualified in Division I, which is for the largest schools in Texas, Class 6A and 5A.
