Glen Rose High School head football coach and Athletic Director Cliff Watkins oversees offseason sports workouts Thursday morning at Tiger Stadium. The UIL authorized workouts for student-athletes of all sports, as of Monday, June 8. Schools are instructed to abide by COVID-19 precautions and guidelines regarding social distancing and sanitizing contact surfaces. The optional authorized workouts include strength and conditioning, as well as sport-specific instruction with coaches. Optional weight training is allowed, but work stations must have the proper social distancing. Locker rooms and showers at schools remain closed for now. Texas schools missed out on normal offseason spring workouts after the UIL announced in April that it was cancelling all remaining sports activities for the 2019-2020 school year. So far, Watkins said, there have been approximately 90 boys and 50-plus girls, grades 9-12, who have been involved in the optional workouts. Watkins said the GRHS male student-athletes will be working out from 7-8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and the girls will start their workout sessions at 8:30 a.m. on those days. They will stick to that throughout June, he said.
